Nick Cunningham

Nick is a partner at Wragge & Co LLP, where he specialises in intellectual property litigation. He also has an active defamation practice and is an accredited mediator.

He trained with the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution. He has taken part in mediations at every level, from county court disputes to major commercial actions, covering contractual, IT, IP and defamation disputes. Amongst his clients he has a reputation for settling cases.

Intellectual property disputes are particularly suited to mediation, because issues can often be resolved by commercial agreements which cannot be arrived at as a trial outcome. A good understanding of the range of possible agreements is key to this.

Defamation disputes are also often suitable for mediation because personal issues become submerged in the technicalities of legal proceedings, but are often at the heart of the complaint. Mediation allows individuals to cut through the technicalities of defamation pleadings and present their complaint far more directly. It also provides an environment in which these issues can be addressed in private, and between the individuals concerned.

Nick is active in AIPPI and FICPI, which are international associations of intellectual property lawyers, and is an associate member of both the Chartered Institute of Patent Agents and the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys. He speaks regularly on IP topics at seminars for trade mark and patent attorneys.
